Sega and Nintendo had the most powerful and direct console war of all time, ranging from 1989 to 1996. Sega's SG-1000 and Nintendo's NES game out in Japan in 1983, their first console. But it was during the 3rd generation of gaming consoles when Sega and Nintendo would have at it. Nintendo would release their Nintendo Entertainment System, NES, and Sega would release their Sega Master System. The Master System was superior to the NES in every way, but it couldn't overturn Nintendo's market advantage in North America and Japan. But Sega's Master System would be most dominate everywhere else, and even enjoyed over a decade of life in Brazil.
Sega's Master System would only sell 13 million units, being the 2nd best sold Sega console. Nintendo's NES would far outsell it selling a massive 61 million units. So obviously Sega got totally destroyed by the NES in total sales. Sega did have the best console by far, but that doesn't necessarily mean a victory if the others have the best library and own total territories. Sega would need to come up with something good to take the obvious advantage Nintendo held in America, where they had over 80% of the gaming market share, not leaving much else for the others. It was then that Sega decided to ditch the dying Master System in favor of something that would really pack a punch, the Sega Mega Drive, or Genesis in North America.
The Genesis came out in 1989 in America, and it really was what Sega needed. Or at least it would become that. Sega's Genesis was able to knock Nintendo off its high horse and stomp it, at least for most of the 90s. Nintenod's games were kiddier, and always have been, than Sega. Sega took that to their advantage, making games that were bloodier and more violent than what Nintendo would put out on their Super NES. Sega had the advantage over Nintendo, and would have maintained it if not for one reason: Sega killing itself from within.
Sega of Japan and Sega of America wouldn't be able to match on key advantages they had. The Mega Drive was losing momentum in Japan, but was still very much alive in America. Sega of Japan would force Sega of America to give up on the Genesis and instead focus on the Saturn that was about to come out. But since the Genesis had so much momentum they shouldn't have given up on it. They would, then, sell 40 million Genesis/Mega Drive consoles before it was given up for the most part, with Nintendo selling 46 million NES consoles.
So Nintendo based on sales was the clear winner of the Great Console War, outselling Sega in the 2 major consoles that they both had. N64 and Saturn would also come out in the 90s, and Sega's Dreamcast, but those didn't have near as good of sales as the NES/Genesis era would. Nintendo thought nobody could touch them, so they didn't put out the Super NES until after Sega was beginning to beat them. But then Sega would defeat itself and allow room for Nintendo to make up for past mistakes and would eventually win out overall. But the gaming community as a whole really are who won. Nintendo would have not had to change their position,so to speak, if Sega never came along and gave them a run for their money. They both fought hard and gaming would never be the same after that. Sega and Nintendo are friends today, and rightly so. They are why console gaming is as great as it is today. I'm personally a Sega fan first and foremost, but Nintendo was needed to push games to where they are today.
